Here is the sling I received from Teg. It's a really beautiful braided polyester design, constructed in the same split pouch style that he says he usually makes from hemp. The end result is very colourful and looks much more delicate than anything I have ever braided. Although its of light construction it seems very durable with a certain density to it and, though thin, it definitely does not feel weak.

I'm yet to use it in anger, though I have managed to test it indoors with a hacky sack. Being a split pouch it had a tendency for the beanbag to slip off, so I'll have to test it properly with rocks when I get a chance to do so. One element that is very different to my own designs is the lack of knot on the release cord, so I shall be interested to see how I get on with that. I shall persevere because it would be criminal to put an ugly knot on a sling as delicate as this!

Thanks again, Teg!

Guess who received this sling ?

I tried a close up to show the world the craftmanship you will all miss... but the emotions did shaken me too much :

Well, I already love it :

I have yet to try it, but it seems perfect for lead, golf balls or avocado...

Without even checking I knew that you got your sling from Donnerschlag, Caldou.  He does beautiful work.  I've traded with him a few times.  His slings perform as good as they look.

Thank ye kindly  8-)

I gotta say, I haven't tried slinging avocados yet. They're too tasty for that  :o
(Although it will easily handle up to tennis ball/fist-sized rocks, so I don't see why not. lol)

When I want to sling avodaco, I also eat them first and then let the nut dry before slinging it :p

I like how this one can stay in it's heart shaped form ;) (It's my colleague that have seen this :p)

Brett, if you didn't do it yourself, I might have accidentally deleted your post.  I'm not really sure what happened.  I was just about to comment on the sling that Dan sent you, my screen jumped, then your post was gone.  If it was me or my computer that deleted your post, it wasn't intentional.  Sorry.

My post self-deleted the first time I uploaded it.  I then re-uploaded it and whatever happened to you happened.  My guess is that it had more to do with the post than with you.  Will repost.

Dan's sling to me.  Leather and jute(?) 36".  By far the most substantial sling I've ever used.  Was throwing tennis-ball sized rocks no problem.  Worked very well, good range, good accuracy.

Nice sling.    I have a few big slings like that, of several types.  "War Slings" are fun to make and use.  Also they tend to last forever.

I just love the feel of those really substancial slings.

Take note of the way the Release cord ends. I use that on every natrual fiber sling I make now. It prevents it from fraying to nothing and everntually having the knot slip out.

All you have to do is leave a little extra cordage and tie the release knot, reverse twist it a bit, and then tie another knot and cut off the excess with about 1/2in of fray. You grip the lower knot and have something substancial that won't wear out to hold on to.

I'm glad you like it Brett.

(this is my 2500th post btw  :) )

I was wondering - the attachment to the pouch is whipped on the retention cord and woven in on the other side.  Why?

I pretty much made a very very small finger loop through the pouch on the release cod side. You just pull the cords about 2-3inches through, fold them over, and braid like normal. So it isn't woven, it's just folded over and braided into the release cord.

With the retention cord. I already folded it over to make the finger loop so I just pulled the finished cord through, folded and glued it, then added a whipping to keep it from coming through.

I've got a new sling. I received the Rat Man sling. Well woven, smooth tact and easy run. It's a beauty tool. Thanks Rat Man, thanks slinging.org.
I show you.

It's a win-win, Panda Man.  I've picked up quite a few techniques by swapping slings in the mail.  I can't wait for the next SITH.  I just "invented" a monster sling that'll catch everyone's eye.  There will probably be another one around Christmas.
Thanks for the kind words, Aurelio.

I'm really digging that sling you made Donnerschlag.  Kind of reminds me of a hubert sling which is probably one of the best compliments I can give ya.  Nice work bro.

Thank you :D
I got one from Hubert during this SITH (it was a hemp Tut/Lahun sling with what I believe to be an 8-strand box/square braid) and I'm absolutely loving it! I'd post a picture, but my phone's camera is on the fritz again. I'll see what I can do though

it's a 10 strand round braid.
the reliascord is reduced to 8 strand.
when a round yarn, is woven around.
the result is a mesh of square cross-section.
at a flat yarn, leather strap or not dimensionally stable as wool yarn.
is the result of a round cross-section.
if the netting has a core,
has the result, even with a round yarn, rather a round cross-section.

I hope you understand what I mean

Here is the sling I got from Aurelio.  It is made of sisal and has leather stitched to the pouch.  The leather is also wrapped around the release cord knot.  The wrapping and stitching is hemp.  It is obvious that very skilled hands constructed it, and some time was spent in the making of it!  I am very impressed how symmetrical it is.  The leather fits perfectly on the split pouch, and the tapering on the braiding is amazing!  In the close up pics you can see how consistent the braiding is.  I am very happy with it, thanks again Aurelio!

I have never slung with a sling of this design. So it was a learning experience testing it out for the first time.
Here is a video of my first slinging session with the sling!

OK, so today, I went to test my new sling (for real).

I already knew it works well with ripe apples, now, I know that's the best POWing sling I have ^^

I didn't break any length record but my golf balls still went for some nice distance :)

I am a little bit late to post pictures of the sling which I received from Dork. Unfortunately I was not yet able to use it extensively, as I didn't want to completely cover it with mud as the fields are at the moment more swamps than anything else.

So here we go: The sling has a nice tight and even woven split pouch, peruvian style. The additional strings needed for the weave are taken away and cut off continuosly at the back side without any additional seewing nor glueing (see 3rd picture from above). In contrary the strings removed or added during the taperings (see 2nd picture from above) are fixated with some sort of glue. The release and retention cords are thin 3 strand braid, which gain in width by added strings towards the ends. The flat and broader 3 strand braid at the end of the retention cord allows for a firm grip and has a replaceable tail, something I have never made myself (see first picture).

The slings folded length is 75 cm. The pouch has width 3.5 cm, allowing for good control of stones up to around 150 gramms or more. The material used are dyed strings presumably from plant fibers, but I have no idea which plant it is.

Overall it is a really nice looking and well made sling, of which I expect to be very durable.

Dork, thank you very much!

Better late than never.  Here's a snazzy leather pouch sling I got from Jlasud.  The retention cord is hemp and the release cord is braided bale twine.

The printing says Rat Man in Sekler-Hungarian runes.  Pretty cool.  The sling performs excellently, as you might guess from looking at it.   Nice work, Jlasud.  Thanks!

Are we going to be posting pics from the Christmas SITH here as well?

No, LS.  To save confusion the Christmas SITH will get its own thread for posting pictures.

Finally getting around to posting this picture, sorry it's taken so long. This is the sling I received from Rofriedrich in the last SITH. Note the double finger loops. It's interesting, and I like the way it feels.

This sort of thing is the reason I like the SITHs so much.  I never thought of double finger loops.  I have to give that a try.
Coming soon:  The Rat Man Sling.  This time I didn't try to steal an existing design.  This is really original, as far as I know.  Both Dan and Redbeard will be getting one.

Well, better late than never...

Here is the sling I sent to Bibbs 2 weeks ago :
http://caldazar.free.fr/img/slings/bibbs_mini.JPG.
It took me a lot of time but I was learning the 4 strand braid over a core :-[

I took a polypropylene string, fold in 2 not in the middle (one end finish slightly after the pouch), whipped the loop and braided over this core. I had to add some strands to have 2*4 strands for making the 2 strands pouch.

Since I never managed to use this kind of "pouches", I don't know if he will be able to... But when I tried it, it sure sounded nice with a loud CRACK... and a snow ball in the wall behind me ^^

I took the liberty to post it here now since Bibbs didn't show around since october

Easter is March 31st this year.  I'm thinking of doing an Easter SITH.  That's a lot of advanced warning so everyone can start early and make their very best sling.  Keep in mind that this isn't a contest.  We have many skilled masters and many beginners.  The idea is for everyone to do their best and swap ideas along with slings.
