Title: Paleo-Orginals, primitive crafts 10% off Sale!!
Post by LukeWebb on Sep 1st, 2012 at 5:57pm
Hey, seeing as it is the end of the season and Christmas is coming I'm having a 10% off sale on all products!  If there was something you've had your eyes on now is the time to save![/size]

Hey, below are some primitive arts and crafts I make and sell at a local farmers market.  Let me know if there is anything that interests you, I am open to trades but would prefer $.  I also make Native American paddles by custom order, whistle walking sticks and have a harpoon that I am just finishing.  If there is something I don't have that you are looking forward shoot me a pm and I can likely make a great one for you!

Ball Headed Warclubs:  Each of these handcarved ball headed warclubs is carved from a birch sapling, first I must find a sapling with a burled root, then I must dig around it and cut off all the roots.  After seasoning I carve it into a traditional club with or without an animal totem depending on what the piece looks like it wants to be.  Each club is all one piece, the burled root being the ball and the curve is natural to the trunk to prevent cross grains.  Each burled ball is firehardened by applying mud where I do not wish it burned and then holding it over a flame, shrinking the grain in the burl tightening and hardening it.      These three are currently available and for sale with others coming, if there is anything particular you would like for yours I encourage custom orders.
  Clubs range from $125-$145 Ca

Inuit Sunglasses are handcarved from personally harvested and seasoned spruce saplings.  They feature leather straps for wearing and a blackened back to focus your eyes on the slits for improved vision.  They work simply by limiting the amount of light getting to your eyes through the narrow slit, but just like a peephole you get near perfect vision.
Made to order, other styles available:   $35 ea.

English ships ballast flint and beachglass knives.  The neckknife is sold, I will be making more and can make something similar to order. The smallest knife is a knecknife, boasting a small English flint blade made from old ballast hafted to an antler handle with spruce pitch and gut.  The largest knife in a wooden case is made from English ballast flint as well, with a single edged curved blade, perfect for skinning, hafted with spruce pitch and gut to a beaver cut alder handle.  The sheathe is carved from maple and hangs from your belt.   The knife in the smaller wooden sheathe is made from beachglass, hafted with spruce pitch and gut to a beaver cut birch handle, the sheathe is made from maple and hangs from your belt.

Hey, here's a harpoon I just finished. The shaft is spruce, the head is serviceberry with rhyolite flake inserts hafted with spruce pitch, it tapers fits into the hole in the end of the shaft and is attached to a reverse twisted wax hemp line. When the prey is..uh..skewered...simply flik the release toggle (also serviceberry,) releasing the head. Fasten your line to your boat or something near you or hold onto the handle to bring in your prey.
All lashings are hemp, the hand rest, (to keep your hand from sliding down the shaft when thrusting,) and the release toggle pin are maple, tied securely to the shaft with hemp cordage.

  Asking 225$ Ca

Harpoon head

Release mechanism (toggle?)

Handle on end of line to hold on to your prey and reel them in!

Hey, thought I finished my second paddle!  This one is also spruce, fire hardened and decorated by covering with mud where you don't want it to burn then holding it over a flame or hot coals.  The blade is leaf shaped to allow it to be quieter in the water, slipping in and out easily and it moves remarkable smoothely through the water, I was out kayaking with my freind Rob and took it along, we both really liked using it.  The ridge running to the point also channels water to drip solely from that point making it quieter.  As most of my stuff is, this is also for sale in the Vendors Row section.

          Asking 125$

I'm out of time right now, but I will add the rest of the items available shortly.
Thanks for looking and feel free to pm me with any questions.

No, I haven't, primarily because I don't have a jawbone.  I gather all my own materials and use whatever I can find for most of my projects rather than buying materials, that's why I like ball headed warclubs as there are quite a few suitable burled root saplings around here.

I do like those clubs.
How tough is the wood of the ball ?
lol actually more important - what do they weigh ? (international postage is vicious)

lol oh well - out of my current price range anyway :-)
I'd say they are worth the money - I just don't have it spare.
But they are very very cool clubs.

They don't weight too much, maybe 5lbs at a guess.  The wood in the burl is very tough, especially having been fire hardened.  Being birch it is not as dense as say ash or oak, but it was what was often used in this area along with maple.  One of the big plusses of birch is that it is fairly hard but also quite light, so though a club like that delivers a tremendous impact when swung it won't tire your arm out.
