Heres a few seconds of soldiers slinging grenades from a roof during Spanish Civil War. I think they are republican soldiers, not sure though. Both sides used them anyway.

He used sort of a side armed Apache style.  It seemed to work for him.

It would want to work for him, after all he has something on a fuse in his pouch, its not like if it slipped out he can just reload and have another go!

Id love to know if the soldiers using slings during this period were rural, and brought either their slings or more likely slinging knowledge with them or was it a widespread thing used by soldiers from everywhere?

In some parts of Spain shepherds still use the sling, today. Me thinks, there were guys in the army that knew how to use a sling and improvised one during the fights. They had grenades, and wanted to throw them farther. It's visible that it has a large pouch, suitable for grenades, clearly not a sling brought from home.

My throwing arm sucks.  If I was launching hand grenades I would almost certainly use a sling.

amazing - always said slingers would make great grenadiers.  :)

Surprised modern special forces don't use them.

I plan to do this when I hit the Air Force BMT Field Week... I think the Sargent(s) will be pissed, to say the least.
This was tried in the First World War as well, but didn't work as well in a trench.

Interesting left-hand bolt configuration on some of them. Or the film got flipped over and everything's reversed right to left.
