Title: New Tutorial.. Sheep Shank Slings Post by Rat Man on Jun 2nd, 2012 at 5:26pm
OK, here's the long awaited tutorial on my alternate method of making slings based on the Sheep Shank knot; the TS3, pj, Cobra, etc.. This method can also be applied to making tape pouch (more on that later) and other slings. In this tutorial we'll be making a pj, sort of.

The new weaving pattern suggested here is optional. I recommend doing it because it gives your pouch a nice taper and makes it easer to get the whipping on the release end up snug against the pouch. |

Thanks, kid. I found doing it all in jpegs the easiest way to keep it organized and to post it.

Just one more thing... if you're making your sling from polypropylene or some other fairly slippery material be sure to make the cut ends of the warp, the ones that you whip over, extra long. Otherwise your sling might pull apart. So, what do you all think? Good idea, waste of time, or what?

A fine tutorial of how to change a simple sling model into something special. I`ll put it on my to do list.

This is the same sling design you've sent me right? cool tutorial, I'll try making one someday
|
Title: Re: New Tutorial.. Sheep Shank Slings Post by Rat Man on Jun 6th, 2012 at 7:33pm
Yes, Jauke, it's a very modified pj like I sent you. Once you start making slings that way you might just keep on doing so. Thanks, timann. I'm still enjoying the excellent slings that you sent me during the last SITH. I especially like the one with the diamond shaped pouch. That one really rocks! It's almost too pretty to use.

Rat Man, please use it, just let me know when you wear it out. Guess we`ll be able to work out something then :)

Hey Ratman, in my boredom at work I grabbed all your photos and put them together in a pdf format for easy read. Here is the link if you would like it.

Title: Re: New Tutorial.. Sheep Shank Slings Post by jlasud on Jul 6th, 2012 at 3:01pm
Great tutorial RM! I didn't give much attention these slings, mainly because i was using irregular stones, but today as i was slinging clay balls,i recon this sling would be a great clayball chucker. As if it was meant for it ;)
|
Title: Re: New Tutorial.. Sheep Shank Slings Post by Rat Man on Jul 7th, 2012 at 2:58pm
Thanks, jlasud. The pouch is cupped deeply, so it holds round projectiles well. I've used them for golf balls quite a bit. They work very well.

I've made several woven slings, and I still have trouble keeping the the pouch that even and tidy. Great job for a first sling :) |
Title: Re: New Tutorial.. Sheep Shank Slings Post by Rat Man on Jul 23rd, 2012 at 3:12pm
It's a heck of a lot better than my first few woven/braided slings, that's for sure. It looks like Daniel is well on his way.

Praise me not too much :D
Thank you for your compliments. I still have some problems, but as you said; i think i'm on good way and i have an idea of what doing next time better :) I think i will try out some other material. I think i found my favorite way of making slings (woven). It was big fun for me making it ;) In my holiday coming next week i will try out this sling and the balearic i got from Jaegoor. (the difference in slinging this one compared to the balearic is heavy ;) ) Best regards Daniel |

Just saw this. Really impressive. Well thought thorugh and nice final product. Shows what you can do with skill and brain power alone. Well done. I *love* the way you cupped the pouch. Am gonna run home and try it.

Thanks much, Brett. You'll find that you can use the techniques here on many different styles of sling. The modified pj sling made here is a very versatile work horse.

I'm fortunate to have had Rat Man make me one one these, and I love it. This here is my go to sling and he made it quite colorful to boot. This puppy launches everything I've stuck in it, except a toy Pikachu I found at the park lol. Can't brag enough about it.

Title: Re: New Tutorial.. Sheep Shank Slings Post by asemery on Apr 10th, 2013 at 6:50pm
This sling is based on the sheepshank
After 5 loops (6" long") are made you begin a sheepshank but complete an overhand knot by placing the end of the cord through all five loops and pull tight. Repeat at other end. No extra weavings are necessary. Tony |
Title: Re: New Tutorial.. Sheep Shank Slings Post by Rat Man on Apr 12th, 2013 at 8:43pm
I'll have to give it a try, Tony.

Title: Re: New Tutorial.. Sheep Shank Slings Post by asemery on Apr 15th, 2013 at 6:36pm
I hope you like the modified sheepshank sling. It is certainly easy to tie. I first made a sling like this almost 40 years ago from the directions in a 1974 book "Whittlin', Whistles and Thingamagigs" ISBN 0-8117-1882-2.
I posted this sling only because of the name. Your tutorial is excellent. Tony |
Title: Re: New Tutorial.. Sheep Shank Slings Post by Jabames on Apr 15th, 2013 at 9:02pm
So how long of a piece of cord do I cut for a 40 inch sling? I'd like to use that 5 6 inch way

Cord length times 2 plus pouch length times number of strands plus 6 inches to 1 foot for knots. |

'zactly. I like to play it safe and cut extra. For a 40" sling I'd cut a ten foot piece of line at least. |
Title: Re: New Tutorial.. Sheep Shank Slings Post by Rat Man on May 8th, 2013 at 2:33pm
I'd like to add one step that I now do to all of my slings made in this manner. After you cut the loops as in pages 8 and 22 unravel each individual strand. In this case you'd unravel each strand into the three strands it was created from. It may seem like a lot of unraveling but it will make it much easier for you to cover the cut loops with the West Country Whipping. The next time I make such a sling I'll insert a picture of what I'm talking about.

Well done it spurs me on to improve my own construction skills :) |
