We had a thread up awhile back that showed hunting laws by state. Does anyone have a URL for that thread? I will be going on vacation to Missouri in a few days and if it's legal I would like to get a video of me hunting with a sling. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don't have enough time to keep updating the list right now, so there is no information for Mizzou.

Here's how I look up the information: Search for "Missouri criminal code" on google and go to the official Missouri state website. Find the Missouri definition for slingshot and determine if a sling can legally be counted as a slingshot in Missouri. Then search for "Missouri hunting laws" and find what weapons are legal to use for each class of game, again only on the official Missouri state website. If slings fit into the the description for slingshots and slingshots are illegal then so are slings. If slings count as slingshots and slingshots are okay, then so are slings. If slings don't fit the description for slingshots and Missouri's laws list the weapons you aren't supposed to use, then the sling is legal so long as the law doesn't mention it. If slings don't fit the description for slingshots and Missouri's laws list only the weapons that you can use, then the sling is illegal unless the laws mention the sling.

It would be nice if this were put on the wiki, so others could maintain it.

It looks like the MediaWiki site was deprecated in favor of a PmWiki site?  I'm much more familiar with editing and running MediaWiki sites, unfortunately.

Now for the weird part... Slingshots are legal for all sorts of small game. The season for almost all these small game animals will be in full swing while I'm there... BUT... unlike every other weapon mentioned, as to what is a slingshot is completely undefined. Every other weapon has a clear definition in the "Definitions" section of the code. The word slingshot never even appears in the Definitions section.

Could that be any more grey? Did they intend to leave the definition up to the user? Seems strange.

As slingshot is undefined, you have a case for use. Given that atlatls are legal and all other "projectile weapons" named in the Mizzou criminal code are specifically legal for small game hunting, you should be fine hunting with a sling. It is not technically legal nor illegal to hunt with a sling. Just don't become the case that gives slinging media attention and changes things.

While Mizzou's law is ambiguous, it is also the easiest the sort through. They actually have a search feature for their laws. :D

By not putting this on a wiki I can control the standard of the research going into the list. The moment this goes to a wiki I lose all control and anyone can edit the list using a bad source, which could get potential hunters in a lot of legal trouble.

Yes by not defining it specifically it really does seem that they are purposely leaving it up to individual discretion. Well... I guess all that is left is to get some good recipes together.

maybe the best way would be to find a game warden for your area and have a chat with them......since they are the people that will be giving you a fine or worse if its not allowed..........
you might even gain a convert or two to our cause ;)

Here in Alaska,  I don think theres any prohibition against any hunting weapon,  except a crossbow idk why must not be particularly effective for hunting,  of course archery and firearms are allowed with proper training and legal age requirements.  Young kids can hunt but of course with guidance from adults.  Spears and other primitive weapons can be used,  seems like theyre not in the regs,  soo theyre off the books and its ok to hunt with atlatls or spears;  people have checked with dept of fish and game and with the sate and its ok  ;)

Yep, I will be doing that before any actual hunting. Better safe than sorry. Most people call slings "slingshots" anyways so if I just approach it from the view that it's an "old" style slingshot and then explain it, hopefully it will be ok. The thing that makes me think it should be ok is the fact that they specifically decided not to define what a slingshot actually is, while everything else is defined, even atlatl... There is only one reason to leave it ambiguous in my mind.

Welcome to large Govenment, where the interpretation of the law is pretty much up to them.   :)

I would think if you had a farmer with crop damge from rabbits, squirrels, or groundhogs, he'd probably let you hunt there. For you it would be hunting, but it's technicaly just farm work.

pretty sure its legal here in texas its been a few months but when in read the booklet with all the and fishing regs i cant remember the name of it but i remember the weapon i was disapointed at not aloud was airguns  :(
also rimfire guns of any cal were banned it
but they did not define what weapons you could hunt with just those you couldnt

and dan i aggree with you completly  thats just one of the many problems that comes with big goverment
