Title: How, Where, and How Often do you carry a Sling?
Post by fletch_man on Nov 10th, 2011 at 10:20am
During the work week I usually carry 4.  2 of my woven ones because I stretch and work them while working at my desk.  Gutted woven paracord might be a little tight here, a little loose there,  I don't always get to shoot each one in so I manually "set" them.  And, some of my customers want to be the first one to throw with it.  I carry 2 of my Apache styles in my little ruck sack (I walk to work) in the side pockets with stones already in the pouches and layered so I can just pull them out.

When I'm hiking (Arizona desert) I keep a woven one at hand usually in the side pocket of the ruck and I use another for a belt.  I keep 5 stones on me always in the ruck.  If I'm out shopping I keep an Apache style wound around a stone in my pocket.

 How do you carry?

Right now I am slingless, due to not finding a decent set up where I can braid one (I hang the finger loop and braid down, and currently lack something to hang it on. Normally, I bring slings to go slinging, and carry one with me whenever I plan to socialize with anyone I know who also slings, or am likely to be waiting in a large open place for some time.

I walk my Huskies twice a day.  That's when I do my slinging.  Also, if I'm going to be outdoors for a while for any reason, fishing, camping, whatever, I carry a coulpe of slings.  I usually carry at least two, one big and one small.  They can be any style, TS3, rockman, pj, seven strand, tape pouch, Apache,  seatbelt, Aussie pouch, etc..  Often, when I have the Kali Bag (back pack with mostly dog stuff) I carry a bag of extra slings that I made to give away  to the neighborhood kids.

As a newbie to this whole slinging thing I don't yet carry a sling with me every where i go but i do carry quite a few meters of paracord ! I plan to once i have enough skills to throw rocks safely until then I'll leave the tennis balls at home.
Aussie is sending me one, thanks again mate, and i will carry that with me all the time i think. Along with the stones once I'm no longer a danger to myself and anyone standing behind me.

Almost always. Some places it may be seen as anti-social. But there's always at least one in the car.

Keep my 24" sling in my right front pocket, it' the only sling I use anymore. If I ever find some stones on the ground and they look like they are out of place I, uh... put them somewhere else ::)

It's not always in the front pocket, If I'm not taking my wallet I put it in my back pocket, If my pants don't fit right I use it as a belt, and sometimes I wear it as a wristband. But I almost never carry 2 slings, but I never leave my house without a sling.

(Honestly, I've brought my sling to weddings and other formal occasions.)

It's bow season here.  I carry a sling wrapped around my quiver and five fired clay shot in the bottom of my quiver.  I have thrown all five at a squirrel on a couple of occasions when I was leaving the woods in the morning.

Bow season here too, but I hunt with a compound bow, no place to put shot on my bow-mounted quiver.
I should get into traditional archery someday.

Crow Hat I know what you mean sometimes that rock would just look better way over there.

It's bow season here too, my first, hunting with an osage short bow doesn't allow for a whole lot of variables learned a ton though. Unfortunately they really screwed up here in PA cause the peak of the rut is the last day of buck/doe archery and then the next week is just doe and then it's deer armegedon when rifle season comes around after Thanksgiving. But by the time rifle actually comes the rut will be dieng down. During this time of year the deer are moving more but are less consistent so finding them is ususally the tough part. I ususally either stalk or sit in a ground blind between a corn field and their bedding and on weds I saw 7-8 deer several of which were bucks but they were out of range for my my primitve bow, so I set up a ground blind in the same spot they were yesterday and nothing.

I used to carry 2 slings, one small and one large, but then I just figured I could just make a medim size sling and carry that, so that's what I do. 26in thick cords medium/large leather pouch big enough for tennis balls. I carry it hunting too but just haven't had tome to hunt small game too. And I ususally carry it in my left cargo pocket or if I am wearing jeans then my back pocket.

Usually I get to go to sway straps, and a bag with me when I plan to socialize with someone I know who also slings, or that I'll probably be waiting in a large open space at any time.

i only carry a sling when i'm going somewhere i know i can sling. my pockets are pretty tight, and i my EDC while not so much, doesn't allow much more in my pockets. plus i'm more likely to use my EDC then to use a sling.

what does EDC mean here? acronymfinder says 'Every Day Carry', but that does not quite make sense with
that sentence.

i almost always carry an mason-line apache sling with the strings wrapped up in the pouch,
as well as a 24" mason-line rockman.
i sometimes also carry a  couple of jute slings, currently a couple 24" and 28" balaeric type split-pouch slings.

EDC does mean every day carry, although it is actually somewhat of a hobby and actual activity. basically it's a philosophy that it's better to have something and not need it, then to not have it and need it. with that in mind, EDC'ers carry a lot of stuff they might need or not need, sometimes up to 10 pounds ranging from survival kits to medical packs to toiletries, because you never know right? anyways, i persoanlly prefer carrying essentials- knife (when legal), flash light, pen, phone, earbuds, wallet, keys, duct tape, and some cord.

take a look at this for more http://edcforums.com/

i fit all of it in my pockets, and it is perfect, but my slings don't are a bit large. i've tried it as a belt, but i don't like it.

that looks familiar... i tend to carry a lot in my pockets, for about that reason.
also, something comes to mind about the feeling of power that comes with saving the
day with an item other people think you strange for carrying--my brother thinks it was
a quote in someones signature on a forum somewhere.

i usually carry a couple of usefull bits of metal(straightened out collander handle, short found rod), knives, small string and some rope, pen & notepad,
string, lighter, wire, paper clips, fishhooks, etc. in a belt pouch.
large pockets are my friend :)

yep, pretty much.

i don't have a belt pouch since i go to school and people tend to give you funny looks. and my school has some shady folks...and it doesn't look good when you have a large pack of goods with you...

I totally do that too.  I'm a knot girl, so I always have several lengths of paracord or shoelaces with me.  It's nice to know that I can make an improvised sling by tying a buntline hitch to a pop bottle neck (or similar weighted object).  This also functions as a meteor hammer.  It's nice that this is a weapon I can take anywhere, and it's something that someone wouldn't find even if they searched me.  (wait...  you can use a bit of string as a weapon??)

Ditto, all the way.  Last time I was looking for some replacement they had none, maybe they are out of fashion, don`t they think of us slingers at all.
Mine have seen lots of use, I stubbornly maintain and repair them as much as I can, but sometimes even I has to give in and buy a new pair.
But I hate to throw away stuff before I really has to, because that makes me feel like a modern human being :D

In my job-car I have a couple of slings and about 20 nice stones...

Today I promised Yurek I will try to carry one sling with me whenever I can. To be able to practice when I got a chance to.

BTW I also have a EDC-backpack with me. In there I have a lots of rope => easy to make a sling. Just need a stone or two in there too....

I used to carry one with me in my pocket almost all the time. It takes up practically no space and weighs nothing. After years of doing this though I realized 99.9% of the time I wasn't able to use it at any of the places I was at. Not just because there are people around. But there are no stones around here anyways, even if it was in the middle of no where.

On top of all that it has this strange draw to it, not unlike the One Ring from the Lord of the Rings. It just calls out to be put on even if I know I can't use it. So now it stays at home hanging from a nail by it's finger loop.

I have a simple rope sling in my glove compartment....  I braid very nice 16 strand wool slings and I like to carry them hanging from my belt loop onto my thigh.  It is like the one ring.  I really love slings and can't stay away from them.  I can't carry a bullwhip around without getting some looks, but the sling can go just about anywhere without problems or anyone even knowing what it is.

One time we went to a pot farm (the clay kind) and I put the sling in my pocket there.  Didn't want to alarm the owner.  Oh wow it was a target rich environment, complete with ammo....

Anyway: I did sling today! On my coffeebreaks at work. I didn´t hit was I was aiming for though. More practise needed!  :D

I carry at least one sling with me all the time. In cold weather, it's always in my jacket pocket. In warmer weather, I'll usually thread it through the belt loops of my britches. Funny thing is...nobody even notices it.

Every time I'm out and about tied to my hat. Taking mine on vacation with me in January won me a great time and friendship with some locals on Guam. I keep one in my urban rucksack right next to my laptop. I'm experimenting with marbles and small woven slings for the ultimate pocket package. The sling is probably the only weapon that easily passes through the various travel or other security checkpoints. Who questions a couple rocks, string and a pouch?

I wish I could wear mine out in the open like Pikaru.  That is awesome! ;D

I wear cargo pants to work, and also when I am not at work.  They are less constrictive and more comfortable than jean pants.  In one pocket I carry my paracord and leather sling everywhere.  In my car I have spare paracord, another leather and paracord backup sling, two or three paracord woven slings to share with other people, and a can full of stones.  My winter car has a paracord and duct tape sling for launching snowballs!

I pretty much look for a suitable place to sling where ever I go, it's fun!  Heck, one time I was at a restaurant and the cooks there were balling up fruitcakes and smashing them with golf clubs.  I said I could make them fly farther.  And of course I had my sling on me!

Not only is the sling tied to my hat, inside the pouch is a 'perfect' stone for throwing.

I keep my small sling, what I have now learned is called TS3, made from boot laces in one of the water slots of my everyday backpack with a rubber ball that I either sling for my dog or against a wall on my break at work. I do plan on replacing it though because I find it a bit too small (the length of my forearm), but I do live in the city now so I don't have much room so I'm afraid of making a sling too long for realistic use.

Two, three seconds... the stone is already in the pouch, the cords are not tied, just the ends tucked in. You grab the stone with your left, right hand at the strings, the wind up then the pitch. Goes pretty quick.

I try to sling 3-4 times a week if possible. If weather permits I head out to the middle school here by work on my lunch break. If I get out of work early enough I get some more time in before the comute home.

On the weekends I go out in the morning before the kids are awake and take them out in the evening to the park when it cools down.

I generally have two slings handy, my paracord and an Aussie on me and , two in my BOB and a couple in my ammo bucket.

My sling lives in my back left pocket, and I carry two smooth stones in the front left pocket.
Some of you might think that this is a bit much, but last week I was walking home from work, and a fairly large dog came out of the bushes. He was in a stiff posture, tail straight and giving me a huff and growl.   I raised my voice and said" go on now!"   but he took a step towards me.
So out came my sling, slipped on the retention loop, took the stones out of my pocket and loaded one.
I gave the mutt one more chance to move on, but he chose not to , so I let loose with an underhand cast. I missed to his left but that got his attention and he decided to move across the road away from me.   At the tree line he turned back to look at me, so I sent the other stone at him.
I missed with that one too.....It went over his head and hit a tree with a good solid thunk. At that, he moved into the bushes and I never saw him again.
I'm glad I didn't hit it, I'm not looking to go around popping stray dogs. But i'm glad I was able to convince the hound that I was dangerious enough to not mess with. ;)

I don't think you've been hit in the head by a flying battery before. AA's can punch through drywall. I suggest not posting that you carry a deadly weapon in a zero tolerance area. We like to have plausible deniability in the event that you maim someone.

yeah - what mas said.
tape wrapped batteries are actually lethal missile when launched from a sling.

Not a good idea at all.

Slings are not toys - treat it as gun. If you don't intend to kill, don't use a sling.

Carry one by all means - but totally rethink your ammo. For everybodys sake :-)

I keep one hanging on my belt with my keys, perfectly visible. Let's me introduce people to it and get on my second amendment soapbox (i.e. "I was created capable of arming myself- take it away, and I can make another from my shoelaces in a few minutes. It's a law of nature, not a civil law, and it ain't just about guns. The second amendment simply acknowledges a fact of life.") I only use it here on my own land, where there's plenty of room.

As you must have read on some other threads, any time you use a weapon, even to defend yourself, you can expect grief from the Law.  In that you'll be in for a huge hassle, make absolutely sure that you have no other option before you use your sling, or any lethal weapon, to defend yourself.  I was arrested and had to spend $1500.00 on a lawyer  because I defended myself from a prowler in my own front yard!
You shouldn't be sad.  You should be very happy that you have friends that care about you enough to give you good advice to keep you out of trouble.

The pepper spray is a MUCH better idea.  Just be careful when you use it.  If the wind is wrong you could end up getting yourself as well as your attacker.  Though I've never done it I've seen it happen many times.

I have two that I use, almost identical so one goes in the back pocket of my work pants the other in my jeans. As for ammo usually just what i find on the ground unless I am out walking the dogs in the fields then I take a pocket full of nice round pebbles for rabbit.
