Title: Spanish Civil War
Post by maad erllin on Oct 14th, 2010 at 1:51am
I was watching a documentary today about spanish civil war, and as they were speaking about people throwing grenades, I saw a video of those days with a soldier throwing a grenade with a sling.

Does anyone has more information about that?

The earliest references to these grenade-throwing soldiers are from Austria and Spain.
International Brigades used slings to throw grenades during the Spanish Civil War. Similarly, the Finns made use of sling-launched Molotov cocktails in the Winter War against Soviet tanks.
The sling became a way to throw grenades further but since ww1, military units have come up with ways to launch grenades further. Now we have grenade launchers attached to rifles or one that has 6 shots. The purpose remains the same as the early grenadiers using slings which is to propel grenades further.

A civil war raged in Spain between those loyal to the newly- established Republican government and those who favored a conservative, militaristic system. The war was an outcome of a polarization of Spanish life and politics that had developed over previous decades.

The regional government building in Pamplona is still pocked with bullet and shell holes from the conflict. Which has nothing to do with slinging, either.

I once read that, during Ww1, along the Italian front both soldiers used some slings to throw grenades.
But I've forgot where I read that, sorry  :-/

From an earlier post

"This is the trailer for the (not bad at all) movie "Capitaine Conan", set in 1918-1919, about a co. of special assault troops in the French army on the eastern front (Bulgaria, then anti-Bolshevik operations after WWI). It's from a novel. At 0:20, NB grenades thrown with crossbows and slings.

No idea if this is in the novel, or indeed historical-- slings used in WWI to throw grenades ?"

- it's the French equivalent of the Italian "arditti"
