Title: Easy pouch of medical tape - picture tutorial
Post by Yurek on Jan 3rd, 2009 at 7:47pm
Szymon has asked me how to make a sling pouch of medical tape. As it is my favourite one which I use for tennis balls, dog balls and other balls (including snow balls), I have decided to answer his questions at the forum. Maybe someone will like that design. It is simple, quick and effective, durable and waterproof.

Here is a brief tutorial. If something is unclear feel free to ask questions.

Pic 1. The diameter of the used string is ca. 3.5 mm. The cotton linen medical tape is 50 mm wide.

Pic 2. The two equil and overlapped strings are connected together by the bowline knots (http://www.tollesburysc.co.uk/Knots/Bowline.htm). The ends of the strings are secured by the lighter.

Pic 3. As I use the wide grip I prefere a bit longer ones. In this case is 230 mm long.

Pic 4. Prepare the piece of the tape which covers whole the precisely formed cradle including the knots.

Pic 5. Put the tape on the cradle very carefully.

Pic 6. Stick the tape to the strings gently.

Pic 7. Reverse the cradle together and the stuck stripe together.

Pic 8. Prepare the second piece of the tape which covers the cradle, like before.

Pic 9. Stick the two pieces together, precisely and firmly.

Pic 10, 11. Cut of the excess of the tape just near of the strings.

Pic 12. Take the thirt piece of the tape of the same lenght.

Pic 13. Tear the strip into two equal pieces.

Pic 14. Stick one of them to the edge of the cradle.

Pic 15, 16, 17, 18, 19. Bent the edges and precisely stick them to the cradle in the way like on the pictures.

Pic 20, 21, 22. Do the same with the second strip.

Pic 23, 24, 25. Eventually the pouch is ready.

Pic 26. Here is the ready adjustable sling in resting.

Pic 27. Here you can see it in action. The ball just is going to hit the target.

The instructions and photos are extremely clear and the action photo at the end is simply spectacular!

Perhaps it would be good to add detail of the adjustment knots as this feature is quite unusual. Do you often vary your sling length? What are the min. and max. lengths that it can be adjusted to?

The double string finger loop would ease the strain on your finger and the replaceable release knot would also prolong the life of the sling. With Fig. 8 the release knot always strikes the ground and comes in for a lot of wear.

Thank you all for the feedback.

Szymon,

It is a very nice looking sling. Hope, it works well for you either. My release knot is the double overhand stopper knot made on the folded string. Whereas the retention cord is made on the folded string by the bowline knot.

Ludek,

Your emphasising of adventages of the realase and retention loop is much appreciated. You are right about them.

The shortest length of the folded sling is 67 cm, the max. is 115 cm. I often play with different lengths. It depens on either of the weight of ammo or how strong (far) I'm going to shot. So I appreciate to have a "few slings" in the one.

Well, the tutorial was intended just for the pouch and forgive me, I was too lazy to add detail of the adjustment knots. They are the clowe hitches. Some time ago I described that kind of sling on the forum.

Beautiful. Made a braided sling today and used medical tape for the pouch, only the 3rd time I've slung and I threw almost 50 yards. Amazing. To beginners and experienced slingers alike- USE THIS!

This would be great in conjunction w/ my only sling design consisting of cravats or triangular bandages.  It's basically a huge triangle that I wrapped around and had widened in the center to form the pouch.  The medical tape would w/ the pouch.

It could possibly be the first sling consisting entirely of medical supplies!

Thanks!

with duct tape, you can stretch it so that it makes a little pocket

Looks very clean and easy to make. Just curios to the durability with rocks. Do you need to add extra tape or does it hold up good by itself.

The duct tape one's I've made I didn't add any extra to them... and all I used them for was rocks.  I generally get 2-3 months out of them before I give them away to someone, so I'm not really sure how long they will last.  Good news is, when the tape wears our, just take it off and add new tape.

Wow.. I just made one very much like this and tried it out.  It worked wonderfully, chucking large acorn sized rocks a hundred yards with ease.  I made it small deliberately for rocks that size.  I used a piece of cotton cord and made my standard "Appu-sling" then covered it with medical tape per the instructions.  It's so easy and effective... great stuff for a fast sling when you need one.

OK im sorry but i really dont get it. You used a bowline knot for the 2nd picture and that i understand. but then in the third picture, you some how end up whith a puch from these two bowlien knots? Does anyway know how i do this? all i can get is one loop with that has the string ends coming out on one side.

Think of tying the normal bowline knot that will make a loop on the end of a cord.

Now think of the step where you bring the end of the cord around to make the knot around the twisted bight. Now, use the end of a different piece of cord instead. This gives you two lengths of cord tied together with a free end from the knot running in parallel.

Now flip the whole thing around and do it again, using the other length to twist the bight and the short length coming from the first knot to tie around the bight.
