Title: ahoy

jesse crouch from illinois here.  just found this site and thought i'd sign up because i have a few questions.

ive been interested in slinging for quite awhile and just never got around to actually doing anything about it because i didn't have any ideas on where to start, but it looks like i found them.  ive always been interested in weapons and combat arts, so slinging is my next venture into the weapons/combat world.

Welcome Ioda,

There is nothing that out range slingers in primitive warfare!  I hope this becomes a life long hobby for you like it has for many of us here.  Ask s many questions as you like.  you'll find that we are all egar to help in anyway we can.

see you around.

Tint

Hi jesse,

It's great to finally get serious about this after thinking about it for ages - I know how you feel.  :)

If you're interested in the combat arts, try the SCA (sorry, its the only international group I know of. The main site can be found at http://www.sca.org/welcome.html ). Apparently the An Tir and Artemisia Artemisia branches are near your corner of the world  ;) .

hey selin -

I actually looked into the sca quite a bit in the last year here.. i ended up getting involved *very* briefly with another organization known as Belegarth and they do stuff similar to the SCA, but they use extremely padded weapons and no armor (none required anyway).  very similar fighting styles and weapons used.. just.. sca pads the body, belegarth pads the weapon.

anyway i ended up not really liking either - sca for the rules (like.. no attacking from behind), cost (armor), massive amount of armor you have to wear (i like being in shorts/tshirt only) and belegarth for the no head/neck shots rule and just how most of their people play (they're mostly a bunch of really young guys with way too much testosterone and they all feel like they've got something to prove.  its like a geeky version of football for them or something. way too much ego in the group around here anyway).

anyway.. so what i'm doing now is coming up with a compromise.  ive made some of my own padded weapons myself in the past for training, but im going to make some extra padded ones for actual fighting, but not as padded as the belegarth ones AND i just bought two helmets!  so yay for headshots.  so i'll try it this way for awhile and see how it goes =)

are you invloved with the sca?  if so - what do you like to fight with?

Nah, I'm not a fan of certain SCA aspects (like the 'play a character' part), but I still respect alot of their goals and the depth of their cultural coverage.

I'm in a 14thC 'heavy' re-enactment group based in Sydney - basically we use metal weapons with really regulated and pulled blows, so we only have to use a gauntlet, helmet and shield. But its reeeeally fun to use (and make, here's hoping) the different styles of arms and armour. I loooove sword and shield (and single-sword is awesome!), but I'm learning spear atm.

And also the sling, of course! In my spare time, though, not at our weekly training.

Tough luck about the machoish kids you had to put up with. I reckon its a clever move to disallow head or neck shots though, (sorry!  :D ) - adrenalin is a MARVELOUS thing, but it wouldn't last nearly as long as paralysis, I suppose.

Do you still have someone to train with?

hm wait.. metal weapons and no body armor?  haha.  so it's just reenacting right? like.. you're not actually hitting each other like.. fighting style with the goal of knocking each other down with the weapons.. are you?

yeah the guys (and even the few girls there) are just way too much to deal with.  there are a few who arent that way, but not enough to make up for the massive egos of the many others.  and yeah, definitely with that group it's good that they leave out the head and neck shots since they're not wearing armor on those areas.

i have about two training partners anymore.. one lives about 90miles from here (140km) where i used to live, so we don't get to train much.  we're not always doing weapons stuff though because we both like to practice a lot of other stuff.
my other partner is my cat.  with him i practice timing, arm conditioning and fighting single-handedly (he thinks its unfair if i use both hands and runs away if i do).  and as funny as it all sounds im semi-serious about it; i learn a lot from him and we play just about every day.

other than that though.. no =( i don't have anyone to train with except the trees and myself.

so how about you?  training partners?  involved with anything else combat-wise?  how long you been doing stuff like this?

Heheh, yeah, no mandatory torso armour. We do hit properly but pull our blows - make the same 'kill' without following the weapon through flesh. That's the idea of it anyway.  ;)

Your cat???  ;D Fair enough mate, it probably has more sense than alot of people I know! Sucks about the lack of others - have you thought about starting your own group? I just train with my group once a week, have for the last two years.

You can check us out at http://www.progsoc.uts.edu.au/~elden/ravens/ . The links page is lots of fun too.  :)
