Title: Sling Articles & Books
Post by Pikoro on Mar 4th, 2006 at 10:43am
I'm submiting all the articles and books, which mention the sling, that I have found so far. Some of these you'll already know and some you won't.

I think it would be great if everyone else would also submit to this thread what they've found so that we can all look up the information and expand our knowledge on this formidable weapon.

It will also make it easier for those that want to  contribute to the Goliath Project. For example, if someone wanted to write something for the project he could come to this thread and find some of the necessary sources for his research.

So please contribute to this thread. Remember, even those articles or books that say very little about the sling could be useful to someone.

I'm using APA format to list my sources, but if you don't feel like going through the hassle of using APA or MLA then feel free not to. But you should at least list the name of the book, article, or website and the name of the author. If the source is an article then don't forget to include the name of the magazine or newspaper.

This is one book I found:

Harding, David. (Ed.). (1980). Weapons: An International
   Encyclopedia From 5000 B.C. to 2000 A.D.
New York:
   St. Martin's Press.

Two books I have are:

1) Ther sling for sports and survival

and 2) Sling braiding of the Andes

I was very excited when I got a hold of "The sling for sports and survival" by Cliff Savage because it was the only book I could find on the subject at the time.  For anyone who had spend sometime on this site, the information on it would be very basic.  If you wanted a copy for collection, I guess it is worth the money but if you intend to learn something new from it, you are better off looking through the threads on our forum.

We have come a long way, guys and girls!  Perharps many years from now people are going to say "Those members of slinging.org were the ones responsible for the renaissance of the amazing weapon!" I dare say that the information gathered on our site is the most complete in the world about the sling. 8)

Thanks Tint. The quiz went ok although it was harder than I thought it would be. That's what I get for feeding my sling addiction instead of studying.  ::)

Anyway, here's some more sling sources:

You might check way back in Scientific American.  They at one time had a really good article on slings and their application.  It was probably in the mid seventies, before things started being published electronically.

A note, ministers love slings to demonstrate for churches about David and Goliath, however never use a superball for demonstration, speaking from experience!!!!

By the way Goliath was out gunned, it was like a spear against a hand gun!!!

Here's two books I found that talk a little about the sling.

This first one mentions the tribes in Tierra del Fuego that still use, or least when the book was written, slings for hunting. It also mentions the bola.

Coo, Carleton S. (1971). The Hunting Peoples. Bostan:
    Atlantic Monthly Press.

The next one talks some about the sling in Greece and presents a different theory on the clay bullets found there.

Perles, Catherine. (2001). The Early Neolithic in Greece.
    New York: Cambridge University Press.

welcome gmasterodie! this isn't really the place to ask questions like that; it's more of a resources/research place. I'm sure however that there would be plenty of people glad to help you out of if you posted this in General Discussion. I don't mean to sound harsh but we're just in the middle of a reform to keep posts where they belong; don't worry about, we all made these mistakes as newcomers.

Anyway, Welcome here, I think that you'll find everyone very knowledgeable and helpful.

This one has some interesting things on the sling especially where it mentions the battle of Najar in 1367 AD.

Powell, John, ed. (2002). Weapons & Warfare: Volume I,
Ancient and Medieval Weapons and Warfare (to 1500).
    Hackensack: Salem Press.

This one has a very basic description of the sling, but the interesting part is the quote: 'I have seen a native (of New Britain) knock a bird off a tree at about a hundred yards distance; they seldom pitch a stone further from the object aimed at then three or four yards.'

Stone, George Cameron. (1961). A Glossary of the

All Countries and in All Times. New York: Jack Brussel,
