Title: Imported Peruvian Slings!
Post by Whipartist on Dec 24th, 2003 at 12:24am
Hey Everyone,

Man I just wrote out this whole topic, but when I went to post it, it got erased because I forgot to fill in the subject box!

Ok, as many know, I've been trying to get a source for us to purchase Peruvian Split Cradle Slings.  Well I got one.  Daniel Samanez of www.andeanart.com has purchased some slings from a Peruvian slingmaker, and is now selling them wholesale.  They are less expensive than most of us probably expected- $3.25.  The style may be slightly more utilitarian than what some of us expected, but they appear to be very well made.  Here is a picture.

I like it.  Not the most beautiful sling I've ever seen, but a good quality herding sling, and a great price for the product.  The alpaca wool yarn was probably spun by the sling maker from raw fleece.  Not sure, but I think that's common.  And a sling like that takes hours to braid.  I'd say probably 20 hours of work.  I'm estimating from my own experience.  If these dudes are really good, maybe they could do it faster, but a man can only braid so fast and I'm not slow myself.  I'm amazed I was able to find a source for these things.  A beautiful piece of history and culture, besides being a fully functional sling.  At that price, most of us can afford to own a few of them, and this opportunity may not ever be around again.

Here is the link to the page where they are for sale.

http://www.andeanart.com/store/comersus_viewitem.asp?idproduct=631&idCategory=59

Ok, but there's a slight catch.  Something I didn't expect.  Daniel let me know last week, that they have a minimum order at Andeanart.com.  They are a wholesaler, not a retailer.  I didn't quite let that one sink in until he told me  Let me quote him.

Quote:
It is a minimum of 10 slings in a total order of minimum $100.

If you want less than the $100 I can give you a quote for the order but it will be more expensive after shipping and customs paper work that has to be done no matter how much you order.

Best,

Daniel Samanez

Considering that fact, I want to use this thread as a place for us to express how much interest we have here.  That way we can determine how best to do business.

It's probably best if someone purchases a bulk purchase for the whole group.  Anyone interested?  I'll do it if nobody else wants to.

If I buy bulk for the whole group, I want to determine our interest level first.  Otherwise I may end up stuck with 25 slings and be out $80.

If there isn't much interest, I'll consider purchasing bulk and marking the price up a bit to make it worth my while to continue selling into the coming months.  If however, we have 30 slings worth of interest, I'll go ahead and charge everyone the wholesale price, plus shipping.  If 10 people, each want 3 slings, then we are in for business.  I want 2 or 3 of them myself, so I guess that leaves 28 for the rest of you to fill in.  I'll ship internationally, for those who live outside the US.

Anyone else with any ideas or interest, go ahead.  I just want to get these out there and fulfill my end of the deal with Daniel.  As far as I know, this deal is the first ever made for bulk importation of Peruvian slings into the USA.  So does that make me a famous slinging dude or what?  ;)  So that's my selfish motive.  Someday you must all honor me for my good dead in The Official Halls Of Slingdom.  Other than that, Merry Christmas everyone, and to all a good night.

That should get you somewhere around 4 slings I think.

Ok 24 more slings left if I order a bulk quantity.  Merry Christmas.

Ben, I knew you'd come up with something for us! ;D  Put me down for four of them as well.  If we finagle (sp?) long enough, I'll be able to afford more, but for the moment, I'm in for four.  Let me know all the info, but especially, let me know if you're going to fall short of the goal.  Those things look fantastic!!

We're getting much closer.

I'll give it another week here to see what kind of interest we get, then I'll order.

I think that comes to 17 slings including me.  I'll order here soon, even if I don't get more interest.  I'll take the loss if I have to.  I'm gulping and hoping all the slings are as nice as the one in the picture.  Otherwise I can't send you guys low quality products and I'll take the loss.  See aren't I a nice guy?  LOL.  I'm looking forward to seeing them in person.

Anyone else interested?  I was hoping for more interest than this.

Hey guys,

Quote:

I just went to order and found out that the shipping is $45!  I should have checked earlier, but I expected $20 at the most.  I decided to order anyway and let you guys decide.  I was going to order 31 slings but the shipping for that was $65!  I was hoping we might have more interest in the future, but that brought the individual price up to $6.50, and that's way too high.

Ok this is official.  The price for a sling is exactly $5.75 a piece at an order quantity of 20.  That includes the customs and shipping and all that jazz.

Any order anyone makes will come to $5.75 per sling, plus $3.85 shipping to get it to you.

If you live internationally, the shipping may or may not be slightly more.  Let's just say $4.00.

If you ordered more than one sling, the shipping will be the same, and won't increase.

I just ordered the slings now.  I realize that the price is higher than we expected.  I won't hold you guys to your quantity you put above, since the price has gone up.  But I do request that you please be as generous to me as you can, since I set this deal up and am taking the risk.  I'll have 17 slings available for whoever wants them, as soon as they get to my door!  I'm excited!

$5.75?!?  That's it!  I'm going to buy myself a ticket, fly down to Peru, hop on a taxi, take a bus to a remote village, bribe a village person to make some slings, and...um...fine, I'll just pay the $5.75 you're asking! ;)

Hey Ben, the price increase hasn't deterred me in the least!  I'm really excited to see them!

I changed my personal text quite some time ago; glad someone other than myself actually reads those things.

My first one said, "Don't stand behind me, I'm about to throw."  Then, one day, the new one just hit me and I thought it was funny (and appropo).

Keep your eyes open, it could change again.

LOL, well guys, this whole thing has gotten more complex than my feeble stone age mind has been able to predict.  I've thrown you guys through so many loops that I'm sure you're starting to feel like sling stones.

First the price raised and scared me that my interest would die off

Now I have more interest than I can handle.  Here's the math.

23 slings now requested.

18 slings supply ordered.

I just sent an urgent note to Andeanart.com to order 8 more slings for us.  That is if they haven't shipped yet, for otherwise the shipping would kill us.  I don't think they have shipped, so I'm very hopeful that we will be able to meet the increasing demand and have a few left over afterwards for those who come still later!

If not, then let's try to help Chris and John get atleast 1 sling a piece between the 18 that will forsure come.  I'm giving up mine if necessary.  I'm pretty sure they'll be able to squeeze in the extra 8 though.

Title: Re: Imported Peruvian Slings!
Post by Whipartist on Jan 8th, 2004 at 1:19am
They called me today asking for my SSN for the importation of a package from Peru.  I think I'm on their most wanted list now.  Andeanart wrote me back and said that 18 shipped already.

So the good news is they are on their way across the border!
The bad news is that there are only 18 of em.

Ok, you guys have been really generous and truly are a cool bunch of slingers.  Yeah Rob's on the list too.  So I'm going to do the math and put down the #'s to prevent you all from fighting about who gets to be, "the coolest sling dude in the heap."  The actual #'s are pretty complex if you care to follow the history (and my reasoning.)  Otherwise just go straight to the bold fonts for the final verdict.

Whipartist ordered 3 and then changed his (my) order to 1 when he saw how much the per unit cost was rising as he added slings to the shopping cart.

David_T ordered 5

Archeorob's order was for 9, between him and his brother.  The rest of us are suspicious that they are planning a giant hunting expedition without telling us about it ;)

Mgreenfield ordered 2.

JeffH ordered 3 slings.

So I ordered 18 slings for all of us....  I don't know why I didn't order 20?  I think it happened when I cut my own order down to 1 sling instead of 3.  I think I did that twice or something?  So in my very ordering I ordered 2 slings under what I needed to.  I gave up my sling when I saw my mistake, and so we are 1 sling under at this point.

From there:

John Santos posted that he wants 2 slings

And Chris posted that he wants 2 slings.

That comes to 23 slings demand.  An impossible order to fill with 18 slings.

But to be fair, both John and Chris ordered their slings after I had already ordered for the group.  Thus though we are helping them out, we can only go so far.  I think it's fair to get them 1 sling each.

That brings the demand down to 21.

We need to fill in 3 slings worth then.  And you guys helped me out with that.  The coolest sling dudes in the heap- Mgreenfield, David_T and Archeorob, have all volunteered to help me out by lowering their order quantities.  I guess this must make Rob's giant hunting expedition a bit more dangerous.  But he's apparently tuff enough to handle it.  Either that or else his brother's a really big guy? ;)

Sooooooo!  Here are the final orders.

David_T gets 3 slings.
He generously gave up 2 slings to help out John and Chris.  He gets the Coolest Sling Dude in The Heap Award!  Thanks David :)

Archeorob's gets 8 slings.  I was worried his brother might not make it back from his giant hunt so I left him with 8 slings, just incase. ;)

Mgreenfield gets 2 slings. He was so generous in being willing to give up 1 of his 2 slings, but I don't have the heart to cut him short.  :)

JeffH gets 3 slings.

John Santos gets 1 sling

Chris gets 1 sling.

That's 18 slings!  We're ok!

When the slings arrive, I will post some nice pictures of them in this thread!  At that point I will contact all of you individually about payment (by either paypal, money order, or personal check.) and your shipping address.  I'll ship via priority mail with delivery confirmation.  I've been selling bullwhips and holsters for a long time so this part I'm pretty professional with.

Well that was fun to write.  I'm starting to get pretty excited to see the slings!!!  I first started this journey many months ago.  I didn't even know if I'd be successful back then, but it sure does look like I now am.  This makes me go down in the History books as the first mass* importer of Peruvian slings into the USA, ever!

*If 18 counts as "mass."

Is their a Guiness record for this sort of thing?

                                                      HeeeeeHaaaaa!                                                                        Ben

GUESS WHAT!

They came this morning!  And they are really cool!  It's a strange feeling having them in my room.  It's weird having 18 slings in my room that I got for $3.50 a piece (plus shipping).  I feel like we're giving whoever made them a good year or something.  It's a blessing living in the places where we live, and being able to spend time slinging rocks for just pleasure.  These things look sooo, organic!  I don't know how else to say it.  I feel like they are pieces of history or something.  Barak is probably laughing at me if he's reading this.  But these things look like they've come out of a village.  Which I guess is true.  The wool used is obviously homespun.  This isn't 4 ply craftstore yarn!  It's basic homemade stuff.  It's bulky looking.  The alpaca have two types of fur I think, and I can see it in the slings.  The colors are obviously natural.  Alpacas come in atleast 20 natural colors I believe.  There may be sheep's wool in these too, mixed in.  I'm not sure.  Oh yeah, and they smell like alpaca ;)

There are atleast two types of braids coming off the cradles.  A diamond pattern on some, and another straight type of braid on some of the others.

One thing that surprised me is the size.  Most of the slings are bigger than I expected.  You can sling some pretty big stones with these.  A few of the slings are smaller and a few are larger.

The quality is mixed.  There are a few that are really well made. And about 2/3 or them are pretty nice.  About 1/3 of them are kinda rough.

Here are pictures to illustrate.

This one is one of the nicer 2/3rds.  Not the nicest, but nice.

This one is one of the rougher ones.

Here's a picture of the whole group layed out.

I have more pictures, but these give the best idea.  I think we have possibly 2 or 3 different sling makers here.  Or maybe a father and son team or something.  The quality is of three categories, the size of the finger loops varies considerably between slings.  The braiding patterns vary between slings, and the finishing method for the release cord varies between slings.  I'm not going to thoroughly investigate this but I suspect atleast 2 different sling makers here to account for some of the factors.

My complaints about some of the lower quality slings are a general bulkiness in the cords, some gaps in the cradle braiding, and/or lack of correct symetry, a weaker or rougher finish on the release cord end, and an oversized finger loop.

The nicer slings still look homespun, but are more symetrical, tighter, and less rough.  There are a few slings that are exceptionally nice.

You can see in the pictures that there are a few different patterns and colors.  To me, they are all uniquely beautiful.  There is something about them because they are so primative and organic that is just intriguing.

I'm going to divide the slings up to make sure that those who only receive one sling, will receive a nice enough one to make it worth their while.  But those who receive more than one will receive a mix of some of the nicest with some of the roughest- to kinda even things out for them.  I'll send each of you pictures of what I plan to send you.  Some of these you won't mind using, and some you'll probably want hung on your wall.

What I'm going to do is write everyone individually at this point with the details of how to pay me, and with the pictures and other information.  Expect an email from Whipartist in your mailbox later today.  If I don't have your email, I'll post on here to ask you to write me.

                                                                                                                  Ben

What is your educated guess about how these will hold up to use? Will the loop and release knots hold pretty well? I will avoid using any rough concrete of course on the one I actually put to use.

Title: Re: Imported Peruvian Slings!
Post by Whipartist on Jan 12th, 2004 at 10:20pm
David,

Braided slings tend to not be as durable as leather and paracord.  But they should last pretty long with smooth stones, if you intend to use them heavily.  They are repairable too.  I think they should be pretty durable and I don't think you'll be afraid to use them.

As for feeling them.  They feel like the wool is soft, but with rougher elements in it aswell.  The lower quality ones are lumpy.  I don't feel much famous alpaca softness here.  They feel like they've come out of the bush, not the factory.

We've been talking about aerodynamics here lately.  These aren't.  But they'll be fun to use.  They are larger than what I was originally expecting.  All in all, I think everyone will like the product, but won't go, "OOOhh  Ahhhh." over it.  Not many people own Peruvian slings and these are pretty cool.

As for the end of the release cord.  Two of the slings had knots on the end.  Most of the others had multiple hitches.  A few transitioned into a simpler braid.  And two were left loose.  I finished those myself.

The Peruvians don't tend to use a release node.  They hold the whole cord in their hand and release like that.  So these slings have their release cords as long as their retention cords.  A few of the slings have very large loops.  These will fit around multiple fingers.  I suspect they aren't very scientific about much, they have more of a Nike philosophy.

I divided the slings amongst everyone very fairly.  Everyone got a nice sling and I tried to vary the colors and quality in the larger orders to evenly distribute everything out.

Got to get back to writing you guys individually.

                                Ben

Suggestion,

Keep your slings high. I came into our office in the house and I asked my wife why my new sling had a wet end on the release cord. Our 8 month old Golden Retiever smelled the Alpaca wool and my wife turned to see him with both front feet up on the desk and the fuzzy end in his mouth. No damage done--just a bit soggy :-X

Man are they beautiful!  Ben, you did a bang-up job getting them to all of us.  Thanks a lot!

As for durability, I haven't been able to test them yet...it snowed last night - not much, but under the snow is a 1/4 inch layer of solid ice.  But I had my daughter tug on one end, and I tugged on the other.  They held together well!

Hallo Edro!

Welcome to this Forum!

I am quite new here in Forum too, and I was interested in one P.sling too, so I wrote to "Whipartist" and asked him if there was some left. But all are "gone".
There could be someone that want to sell his, though. I havenīt asked around.
Maybe there will be another chance to order one in some month. It costed quite much in shipment and porto.
But if "we" are many enough it maybe could be earlier?
Whipartist ordered 20 Slings.. So, we only need 18 more  ;)

Welcome to the forum Ed!

3 people have expressed interest in my ordering the Peruvian slings again.  The count is around 5 now but not official.  I'm just guessing at our interest level.

If you guys can raise the count to 17, I will order 20 and keep the last 3 for future people who are interested.

So let's start the count again.  The price is $5.75 US currency, and the shipping is $3.85 in the USA.  I will ship international, but it will be slightly more. Count on $5 shipping if you're international.

Orders over 6 slings will be $5 in the USA.

Ok, counting begins now, anyone interested, please post and put down the quantity you want.  If or when we reach 17, I'll order.

Don't be too hasty though.  Save money to purchase some of the cool T-shirts that Chris is going to be getting for us.

Iīm in!
That would be about 10.75 us dollar for me, and that sounds okay.
Altough, I hope it can wait a month, because this month I donīt have so much money left..
So I "hope" it will take some time to geather enough people..

Count me in!

Thanx

Ulrica,

Great.  I think it will take a while.  This is all the interest we've had so far, and it may take some time before we get more.

Ed is in for 2.

And Dave P. is in for atleast 2 and probably 3.

So the count is 6.

11 more to go to get to 17.  I'll order 3 extra myself and the order will be at 20.

Hello Hobb and welcome to this Forum!

As it is quite qalm here at the moment, i will try answer your question.

Itīs Whipartist that are taking up orders for this slings.
It will probably take a while to get enough for making a big Order. I donīt know how to pay, but there is some possibilities Iīm sure. That will be no problem I hope.
